The Homer Wilson Blue Creek Ranch Trail is a 0.5 mile out and back trail to a small ranch house in Blue Creek Valley that totals 1.0 mile. It descends into the canyon with some stairs, on a pretty steep old road and crosses the canyon bottom to the abandoned house, which means the entire hike back to the parking lot is uphill. A short trail leads down the ranch buildings and connects with the Blue Creek Canyon and Dodson trails. If you don’t want to hike into the valley below, a sign at the improved scenic overlook next to the parking area offers a photo of the ranch building along with some information about it. In 1928, Homer Wilson bought land in the foothills of the Chisos for a sheep and goat operation. Eventually, his ranch spanned 45,000 acres. The line camp at the base of Signal or Carousel Mountain was built for the ranch foreman, Lott Felts. You can take time to visit Panther Path Trail during your travels to Big Bend National Park.

The ranch was the heart of Homer Wilson’s ranching operations in the Chisos Mountains before the Park was established in the 1940s. The existing house was a line camp lived in for many years by Wilson’s foreman, Lott Felts. The house lies in the bottom of Blue Creek Canyon, a major drainage on the southwestern side of the Chisos Mountains. The house can be seen from above, from the start of the trail right by the parking lot.

I like to use a wide-angle lens for night shots, but during the day, when you are scouting, bring a macro lens; the house itself is full of interesting details. Hikers can access the Blue Creek and Dodson trails from this point. The Blue Creek residence measures about 24 feet (7.3 m) by 60 feet with a 16-foot (4.9 m) by 60-foot screened porch on the south side of the house. The single-story residence comprised two bedrooms, a living room and a kitchen, with a large central fireplace. The house features a double roof, the inner layer a traditional reed roof of the type locally used, with a sheet metal roof above. The structures were abandoned when the Wilsons moved out.

The steady clip-clop of my horse finding his way, an occasional huff as he settles in. Cairns are stacks of rocks which are sometimes used to mark trails in areas where they are hard to follow.
